Information is a major resource for meaningful decision and knowledge expansion. Libraries and information centres have played significant role for effective, efficient, exhaustive and pin-pointed information services to the students, teachers, researchers, academicians, journalist, planners, policy makers, scientists etc. To discharge the scientific management of libraries and information centres certain professional skills and knowledge are pre requisites. Library Science Education provided by higher educational institutes, such as universities and poly-technique institutes, has been a effective means to gain the professional knowledge and skills needed for this sector since more than a century ahead in the developed countries. This days more than 110 countries including 5 South Asian Countries are providing library science education.
The traditional librarianship education has been changing as an "Information Science" with the introduction of new technologies in this field. The applications of new technologies in traditional library services have revolutionized the way of information services and its usages. The librarians and information scientists have to develop their skills and knowledge according to changing situation of information explosion and technological advancement. In this connection there is the need of modern library and information science department in each and every country. This was lacking in Nepal up to the year 1995. For the first time Tribhuvan University has recognized Library and Information Science as a discipline for higher education. Establishment of this department is the outcome of this recognition. This a landmark for professional development in Nepal.
